National Institute on Aging

NIA is a big supporter of research being done to understand aging on a more intricate level. The organization has held multiple clinical trials and continues to do so to broaden their findings. The also conduct research in hopes of strategies or treatments to prevent, delay, or slow age-related diseases. One interesting breakthrough they had was conducting an experiment testing whether or not race affects the amount of oxidative stress. Their findings led them to believe that African Americans are at a greater risk for an iron deficiency. The NIA has also

planned to research Alzheimer's and other demetias related to it. Alzheimer's  is used as a general term for memory loss in the old age and the loss of other cognitive functions which can interfere with daily life. Theeir goal is to prevent and effectively treat Alzheimer's by the year 2025. They would also like to support people with Alheimer's along with providing aid to their families.

Institute for aging research

Researchers have discovered that the characteristics associated with aging can be traced back to many functions and factors. This institute has established supportive housing which led to better living conditions for all of the seniors in homes. They also help the nursing staff to gather reliable information about a patients health in order to produce the best care plan. A study of theirs also proved that seniors are able to build muscle through weight training at any age, so this discovery led to more exercise programs. They have also researched Vitamin D in order to increase the bone density of seniors so there would be fewer accidents concerned with falling among people of old age.

leonard hayflick

Hayflick is considered to be the father of modern aging research because he discovered that somatic cells only divide a certain number of times. The limit for the cellular division was found to be 50-54 times per each somatic cell. Leonard Hayflick was also a founding member of the NIA. He had studied the aging process for more than 30 years and created what is known as the Hayflick limit. He also discovered that the finite cellular lifespan is what causing the physical aspect of aging.
